Link a detailed plan to another model

Optionally, you can link a detailed planning model to another, non-detailed-planning model. Models link through the Organization dimension, and when you post to a financial model, the calculated detailed planning data is mapped and consolidated using this dimension.

The procedure below is performed in Detailed Planning Manager.

Link a detailed plan to another model

  1. Select Administration > Model Properties.
  2. In the Linked Model section, turn on Enable linked model.
  3. In the same section, select from Model name.
  4. For Organization, you typically select Attribute value and your model's Organization dimension; this automatically maps your model's Organization dimension to the linked model's Organization dimension.

However, if you want to customize the mapping (for example, the linked model has more than one dimension of type Geography/Other and/or you want to link to a specific member) from Organization select Dimension member and click to open Selector.

  5. If your detailed plan and the finance model use differing time periods (for example, you pay employees twice monthly but your financial reporting occurs monthly) turn on Time Period Mapping. The Time Period Mapping dialog opens; follow the instructions in the dialog.
  6. To enable drill through from the linked model to the detailed plan, turn on Drill-through to detailed planning. The dialog that appears shows a list of the finance model accounts that have a matching detailed planning summary account. Follow the instructions in the dialog.

Note:  By default, the list of finance model accounts that are linked to calculations in the detailed planning model is included in the list along with the related target detailed planning model account. You can choose which accounts to allow the drill-through for by selecting the check box next to the finance model Account ID. You also have the option of choosing multiple detailed planning summary accounts. In some situations, multiple detailed planning accounts will be summarized into a single finance model account.

  7. Select File > Save.

FAQ

What happens if I unlink models?

If you turn off a model link and you had scenarios linked to Versions in the financial model, these dimension links are lost. If you turn the modellink on again, you need to manually re-link the scenarios and Versions.

What happens to time period mapping if I make changes to the Time dimension?

If you add or delete leaf members in your Time dimension in either linked model, you should update the time period mappings, otherwise when you post, data may be "orphaned" in the detailed planning model, with no target in the financial model, or some Time members in the financial model may receive no data from the source. In some situations, but not all, you will receive a warning message.
